New College Costs Lists Give Families the Tools to Prepare for College

WASHINGTON, D.C. – New information released today by the Department of Education will provide families for the first time with details about the cost of colleges and universities across the country. These lists, available at collegecost.ed.gov, were required in the reauthorization of the Higher Education Opportunity Act in 2008, legislation written and championed by U.S. Rep. George Miller. This is the first time the government has collected and provided to the public information on college costs.

The lists show, by type of institution including public, private and for-profit 4 year institutions, the most expensive colleges and universities, the least expensive and the college and universities that have the highest and lowest net tuition. Under the law, the college and universities with the largest increases also will need to report the reasons for the increases to the Secretary of Education.

“In 2008, the Democratic Congress took decisive action to ensure that parents and students would have access to the information they need about the cost of college,” said Miller. “The issue of college affordability and the increasing cost of college has been an ongoing bipartisan concern on the Education and the Workforce Committee. Members on both sides of the aisle have expressed concerns and we’ve taken steps to try to deal with the issues of affordability.

“With this website, for the first time ever, families will have detailed information that will allow them to make smart, informed decisions about college. I’m proud that we were able to deliver on our promise to families as I know this information will be very helpful. In this economy, having access to this type of information can make a big difference.”
