Education and Labor Committee Announces Subcommittee Chairs, Assignments, First Four Hearing Topics

WASHINGTON – Today, the Committee on Education and Labor held an organizational markup to appoint Democratic and Republican members to Subcommittees for the 116th Congress.

The Subcommittee Chairs and Ranking Members are:

Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education

Chair: Del. Gregorio Kilili Sablan (MP-at-Large), Ranking Member: Rep. Rick Allen (GA-12)

Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment

Chair: Rep. Susan Davis (CA-53), Ranking Member: Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11)

Subcommittee on Workforce Protections

Chair: Rep. Alma Adams (NC-12), Ranking Member: Rep. Bradley Byrne (AL-01)

Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions

Chair: Rep. Frederica Wilson (FL-24), Ranking Member: Rep. Tim Walberg (MI-07)

Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human Services

Chair: Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), Ranking Member: Rep. James Comer (KY-01)

Committee Vice Chair: Rep. Andy Levin (MI-09)

Chairman Scott released the following statement:

Our subcommittee chairs and our vice chair bring unique perspectives, skills, and expertise to the Committee’s work. I look forward to working with them to pursue a unifying agenda that expands access to a quality education, a good-paying job, and affordable health care for all.”

During the meeting, Committee Democrats announced the first four hearing topics planned for the 116th Congress:

  • Protecting workers with pre-existing conditions,
  • Gradually raising the federal minimum wage to $15,
  • Investing in America’s public schools, and
  • Preventing gender-based wage discrimination.
