Ed & Workforce Committee Democrats Announce Subcommittee Membership and Ranking Members
WASHINGTON – The Education and the Workforce Committee Democrats announced ranking subcommittee members and subcommittee assignments today at the full committee’s organizational meeting.
“We serve on a committee that affects people’s everyday lives. What we do or don’t do in this committee will have real implications for millions of Americans,” said Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democratic member of the full committee. “I remain hopeful that we can work together to advance an agenda that grows and strengthens the middle class, and makes a positive difference in people’s lives.”
The committee must attend to a number of major reauthorizations in the 113th Congress: the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Higher Education Act, and the Workforce Investment Act, to name just a few. Rep. Miller and other Democratic members mentioned that the committee should also take up health and safety protections, address the growing gap between corporate profits and workers’ pay, among other issues.
“I am humbled and honored to continue serving as ranking member of this important subcommittee and I look forward to joining my colleagues to build a bipartisan agenda that creates the best environment possible to grow jobs,” said Rep. Rob Andrews (D-N.J.)¸the ranking member of the Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee. “I am eager to work with members of both parties to ensure that every American has the skills needed to compete for a job, that their right to collectively bargain is protected, and that they have the ability to save for retirement and realize their full potential.”
"I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Education Workforce Committee in a bipartisan manner particularly on the reauthorizations of the Higher Education Act and the Workforce Investment Act. We must ensure that students and workers have access to a high quality education that is affordable. We must make sure our workforce is trained and prepared for quality jobs and careers in order to keep the U.S. competitive in a global market,” said Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-Texas), the ranking member of the Higher Education and Workforce Training Subcommittee. “Americans are hard workers who deserve the best this country can offer. That is why we must ensure the workplace is a safe and healthy environment where fundamental human rights are respected."
“From a child’s first day in preschool to walking down the aisle at college graduation, a strong education is critical to making Americans more prosperous and competitive in the global economy. We’ve got big challenges ahead, and we as a nation can either move forward or fall back at this moment,” said Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), the ranking member of the Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to making sure that we give our kids the best education possible and move forward. The strength of our nation depends on it.”
“The Education and Workforce Committee has a busy schedule ahead of it for the next two years that includes health care implementation, higher education affordability, retirement security, and, as we know in the wake of the Newtown shooting, a renewed focus on school safety,” said Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.), the ranking member of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. “I look forward to rejoining the committee, working again with Mr. Miller and Chairman Kline, and taking a leading role in workplace safety.”
