Chairman Scott Praises Support for Nutrition Assistance in the American Families Plan
WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after President Biden released his American Families Plan, which proposes strengthening nutrition assistance programs for families and expanding children’s access to healthy school meals.
"The American Families Plan makes a historic investment in preventing child hunger, supporting struggling families, and unlocking the potential of young people across the country. I applaud President Biden for releasing a plan that acknowledges and confronts the enormous moral and economic cost of child hunger, which has surged as a result of the pandemic.
"The Biden plan proposes a permanent expansion of the Summer EBT program, which is proven to lower rates of food insecurity during the summer months when students do not have access to school meals. It also calls for a major expansion of eligibility for free school meals that would give more than 9 million additional children access to nutritious food every school day. Decades of research that demonstrate profound benefits of freeing children from the terrible burden of wondering where their next meal will come from.
"I look forward to advancing the president’s plan to address our nation’s child hunger crisis and ensure that all families can put food on the table."
