Chairman Scott Statement on Workers Memorial Day
WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement to honor Workers Memorial Day.
“Each year, Workers Memorial Day calls on us to remember the workers who have been killed or injured on the job. This year’s remembrance comes amid the worst worker safety crisis in OSHA’s 50-year history. Across the country, hundreds of thousands of people have suffered from workplace COVID-19 infections and thousands have tragically died. Workers in health care facilities, meat processing plants, warehouses, grocery stores, prisons, and many other workplaces have been forced to put themselves in grave danger just to provide for themselves and their families.
“As we recognize the profound losses suffered by workers and their loved ones, we must also recommit to protecting workers’ safety. Earlier this year, the House passed the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act address the high rates of workplace violence injury suffered by our caregivers. Today, we are introducing the Protecting American Workers Act, to strengthen and modernize workplace safety laws.
“Unfortunately, more than a year after the start of the pandemic, there is still no enforceable workplace safety standard to protect workers against preventable COVID-19 infections. American workers are counting on President Biden to implement his executive order to protect workers by issuing an Emergency Temporary Standard.
“I look forward to continuing our work to ensure that all workers in this country can do their jobs and come home safely to their families at the end of the day.”
