Bonamici to Trump: “Keep Your Hands Off Our Birth Control”

BEAVERTON, OR [10/06/17] – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) released the following statement and video criticizing the Trump Administration for announcing two Interim Final Rules (IFRs) that could effectively allow employers and institutions of higher education to drop contraceptive coverage for millions of female employees and students.

You can watch part of Bonamici’s response here.

“Women need unfettered access to contraception to control their health and economic futures. With these rules, the Trump Administration has decided that virtually anyone – employers, health insurance companies, or schools – can deny a woman access to birth control. This is unsafe and wrong.

“This rule could force women to pay 100 percent of the cost of contraception. That’s money that right now is going to rent, groceries, child care, and retirement savings. The Trump Administration’s actions display contempt for women, ignorance about the health care system, and disregard for the struggles that working families face.

“Our country long ago realized that women’s equality depends on access to comprehensive health care, including contraception. By changing course on coverage for birth control, the Trump Administration is sending us back to a time when women were second-class citizens. I won’t allow that to happen without a fight, and I know there are millions of women ready to join me in saying: Keep your hands off our birth control.”

Bonamici has long been a steadfast advocate for increased access to contraception and affordable health care, including opposing Trump Administration efforts to terminate the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, undermine Title X family planning and preventive health services, and defund Planned Parenthood.
