Chairman Scott Statement on August Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 235,000 jobs in August as the unemployment rate fell to 5.2 percent.

“Today’s jobs report demonstrates that the Biden-Harris economic agenda is delivering results, but the emergence of the Delta variant remains a serious challenge for workers and our economy. It is critical that federal, state, and local leaders do everything they can to promote vaccinations and implement evidence-based safety precautions that will protect the lives and livelihoods of Americans across the country. I continue to believe that the Occupation Health and Safety Administration should issue a broader emergency workplace safety standard to protect all workers from COVID-19.

“The economy has now created 4.5 million jobs since President Biden took office, and the American Rescue Plan has accelerated our path to recovery. But our goal should not be return to the status quo. As we approach Labor Day, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to make long-term investments that will build an economy where everyone can succeed.

“Just last week, the House took an important step to advance the Build Back Better Act, which will lower costs for families and offer workers the education and training they need to find good-paying jobs. The Build Back Better Act will make community college tuition-free for two years and provide an overdue investment in job training programs. This proposal also makes child care more affordable and creates universal pre-K, so more parents have the opportunity to fully participate in the workforce.

“I look forward to leading the Committee’s efforts to deliver these investments and create an economy that works for all workers and families.”
