What People Are Saying: Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act
WASHINGTON – Last week, Education and the Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA), Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), and Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) introduced the Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act to further lower prescription drug prices for American families and rein in pharmaceutical price gouging.
Here is what leading advocates and experts are saying about the Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act:
American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME): “Every day, working families and retirees in particular are cutting pills and rationing their medications because prescription drug prices are wildly out of control. Profitable pharmaceutical companies continue to gouge consumers virtually unchecked. The Inflation Reduction Act signed into law last year took major strides toward increasing affordability, but now we have to do more. The ‘Lowering Drug Costs for American Families Act’ is another step in the right direction. It doesn’t just increase the number of drugs whose prices can be negotiated downward; it would mean that everyone on an employer sponsored health care plan, not just people on Medicare, can benefit from reduced costs. This issue is a high priority for AFSCME members, and we are proud to endorse this important legislation.”
Families USA Senior Director of Federal Relations Jen Taylor: “High drug costs remain a significant and growing problem for our nation's families. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022’s historic drug pricing reforms will provide significant savings for millions of older adults and people with disabilities who access health coverage through Medicare. Congress now has the opportunity to expand on this critical foundation to help families who get health coverage through their employers or private health insurance markets. Families USA is proud to support this legislation, which would extend the inflation rebate and expand the price negotiation program – delivering much-needed relief from abusive drug pricing practices to millions of additional workers and families.”
Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach: “Once again, Democrats are tackling the issues that matter most to Americans worried about the high cost of health care. Americans pay up to four times more for the same drugs as people in other countries, forcing people to cut pills in half or skip doses altogether. The Inflation Reduction Act has been a remarkable step forward to rein in Big Pharma’s greed, cap drug costs for seniors, and finally give Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices. More than 80 percent of Americans support the Inflation Reduction Act’s Medicare negotiation program, making it one of the most popular policies in recent history. It’s time to expand these savings to even more families no matter where they get their insurance.”
