VIDEO RELEASE: House Democrats Commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education

WASHINGTON – Today, on the 65th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education, Committee on Education and Labor Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott joined House Democrats in reflecting on Congress’ responsibility to fulfill the promise of Brown by achieving equity in education.

“The legacy of systemic inequality and racial segregation continues to deny millions of children the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Chairman Scott (VA-03). “Instead of confronting this injustice, the federal government has continually retreated from its role in promoting school diversity. Sixty-five years after the landmark decision in Brown v Board, we must commit to finally delivering on its promise.”

America’s schools are more segregated today than at any time since the 1960s. Yesterday, the Committee advanced the Strength in Diversity Act (H.R. 2639) and the Equity and Inclusion Enforcement Act (H.R. 2574) – two bills that will reverse that trend by supporting students, families, and school districts in their efforts to achieve equity in public education.
