Scott Statement on the President’s Budget
WASHINGTON—Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA), the ranking Democratic member on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement today in response to President Obama’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2016:
“President Obama’s budget proposal lays out a fiscally responsible blueprint to strengthen the middle class by investing in workers, students, children, and families. The President’s budget would reverse the arbitrary, destructive spending cuts of the last four years and make critical investments in our nation’s future.
“Despite recent gains in our economy, too many working and middle-class families are struggling to make ends meet. President Obama’s budget would not only help to grow the economy, but it would grow workers’ paychecks, as well. By improving job training opportunities, workforce protections, and family-friendly workplace policies, the President’s budget proposal would help address income inequality and bolster the economic security of families nationwide.
“We know that nothing lifts incomes and ensures continued economic prosperity better than education. Sadly, far too many students—especially those from low-income and traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds—lack access to quality educational opportunities. President Obama has called for funding to close resource and opportunity gaps at every level of our education system—from early childhood, to K-12, and through to college—and to keep a high-quality education within reach of every American child.
“The central goal of President Obama’s budget is something we can all support: helping American families succeed. I look forward to working with my Congressional colleagues on the President’s responsible and necessary proposals. Together we can invest in measures to boost the economy, grow the paychecks of working families, and rebuild this country’s robust middle class.”
