Scott Statement on the 27th Anniversary of the ADA

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the 27^th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“Today marks the 27^th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, a landmark civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The ADA also requires reasonable accommodations be made in the community, schools, and the workplace for these individuals.

“Many of the critical supports that people with disabilities need to live and work in their communities are paid for with Medicaid funds. It is regrettable that, as we mark the anniversary of this landmark legislation, Congressional Republicans and President Trump are currently attempting to cut billions of dollars from Medicaid and severely limit Americans with disabilities’ access to jobs, schools, and their communities.

“Americans with disabilities have the right to fully participate in all aspects of their community, achieve economic self-sufficiency, and live independently. Congress must advance meaningful policy solutions to fully realize the goals of the ADA, such as the Improving Access to Higher Education Act – not cut support for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens.”
