Scott Statement on New Verizon Contracts for Nearly 40,000 Working People

WASHINGTONToday, Committee on Education and the Workforce Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement in support of Verizon’s new contract agreement with Communication Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. On May 19, 2016, Reps. Scott, Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), and 86 Members of Congress issued a statement urging the parties to negotiate in good faith and agree to fair contracts.

“I applaud the Communication Workers of America, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and Verizon for reaching an agreement that will benefit nearly 40,000 working people. I also applaud the persistence, dedication, and unflagging leadership of Labor Secretary Tom Perez and Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director Allison Beck in making these new contracts a reality. For the first time, some workers are being covered since voting for a union in 2014.

“This agreement is a victory for working families and a true testament to the power of collective bargaining in today’s workforce. Too many working families have been forced to do more with less as wages have stagnated and income inequality has grown. When working people are able to speak up together to bargain for a better life for themselves and their families, our economy as a whole does better.”
