Scott Statement on Medicaid Work Requirement Waivers

WASHINGTON – Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s guidance to state Medicaid directors encouraging work requirements designed to bar Americans from accessing health care services.

“The administration’s guidance today paves the way for states to establish work requirements for Medicaid recipients. This action is another attempt to erode popular programs on which families across the country depend.  The burden of work requirements under this guidance would do nothing to create good-paying jobs or improve access to training or educational opportunities for those struggling to find work.  Additionally, allowing states to impose harmful work requirements does not improve the health or economic security of families – it simply threatens the support systems millions of Americans rely on every day.

“Just last month, Republicans funded massive tax cuts for billionaires and corporations by cutting health care for 13 million Americans over the next 10 years. This latest action will further strip health care from Americans who are most in need. ”
