Scott Statement on May Jobs Report

WASHINGTON— House Committee on Education and the Workforce Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA) released the following statement today after the release of the monthly jobs report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  The BLS announced that during the month of May, 280,000 jobs were created – the strongest month this year. The private sector has now added 12.6 million jobs over 63 straight months of job growth, extending the longest streak on record.

“Today’s employment report shows that our economy continues to recover from the worse downturn since the Great Depression. The U.S. economy added 280,000 new jobs in the month of May. While this job growth is a great improvement, we know that there are people who have lost their jobs still trying to find work, and hardworking Americans are still struggling to make ends meet. When job growth is strong, some people who had given up looking for a job return to the labor market and seek employment. That can result in an uptick in the unemployment rate. By committing to legislation that would raise the minimum wage and create and secure jobs, we can help families get back on their feet.”
