Scott Statement on March Jobs Report

WASHINGTON— House Education and the Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA) released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that 126,000 jobs were added to the economy last month and unemployment remains unchanged at 5.5 percent.  To date, the economy has now had a record 61 consecutive months of private sector job growth.

“Today’s jobs report is further proof that our economy is growing and sustaining an upward trend.   So far, 678,000 jobs have been added to the American workforce in 2015, and if we continue growing at this rate, we should expect over 2 million new jobs by the end of 2015. In fact, the private sector has added 12.1 million jobs and manufacturing has added 866,000 jobs over the past 61 months.

“However, the Republican budget signals a retreat for our economy and job growth as it attempts to balance the budget on the backs of students, workers, seniors, the disabled, and our most vulnerable communities across the nation. It assumes that sequestration cuts will be enacted, and then adds an additional $759 billion in nondefense discretionary spending cuts on top of that. Such austerity has failed in every country which followed that strategy. We need a budget that generates growth in our economy through investments in education, workforce training, scientific research, transportation, and infrastructure.  Democrats will keep fighting for these priorities that will continue to strengthen our middle class.”
