Scott Statement on Latest Decision Dismantling the Overtime Rule
WASHINGTON – Rep. Bobby Scott (VA-03), ranking member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce issued the following statement after a federal judge in Texas ruled against the Obama Administration’s rule to ensure millions of working people are paid adequately for the hours they work.
“A Texas district court judge recently declared the Department of Labor’s (DOL) 2016 overtime final rule invalid. The court’s decision is a setback for hundreds of thousands of working people who will be forced to continue working excessive hours without being paid for the extra hours they spend on the job.
“The overtime rule issued by the Obama Administration took a critical step towards giving millions of Americans a long overdue raise by updating the country’s outdated overtime rule. The rule would have increased the salary level under which most workers are automatically eligible for overtime to $47,476, and require an adjustment to the level every three years.
“The Trump Administration has the ability to appeal this decision and I urge them to make the choice to put the economic security of working people and families first.”
