Scott Statement on House Republicans’ Budget for FY 2017
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement regarding the Republicans’ budget plan that demands $6.5 trillion in cuts – the most extreme and harmful cuts ever proposed by Republicans on the House Budget Committee:
“In spite of the fact that we have an existing budget agreement for FY17 and the House Majority has called for new ‘solutions [that] are… sensible and innovative,’ we are instead presented with a budget proposal that would increase poverty and chip away at our nation’s promise of basic economic security for all Americans. This proposed budget makes the priorities of the House Majority clear – it is more of the same trickle-down agenda that devastated our nation’s economy and stagnated wages for working people. A budget that weakens the economic safety net for children and families, burdens more students with college debt by slashing funding for Pell grants and student loans, and denies millions of Americans the security of healthcare by repealing the Affordable Care Act, is not a budget reflective of the responsible governing our nation’s families deserve.
“Working families deserve a budget that invests in their future, boosts wages, helps them balance work and family life, and levels the playing field for them and their children to succeed. Committee Democrats will continue to press for a budget that creates good-paying jobs and puts more money in the pockets of the American people, while reducing the deficit in a balanced and responsible way.”
