Scott Statement on Executive Order to Ban Transgender Girls from Sports

WASHINGTONRanking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive order to ban transgender girls and women from female sports.  To see how this action is part of President Trump’s Project 2025 Agenda, see pages 332-334 here.

“This executive order is yet another overreach by this Administration, and a clear example of government stepping in where it doesn't belong.  Rather than address the real, urgent issues that students and families are facing every day, this Administration continues to target vulnerable students—specifically transgender girls and women—with a shameless attempt to bully them and force states, institutions, and sports organizations to follow a federal mandate that lacks clarity and understanding.

“According to Congressional testimony from the NCAA, of the over 500,000 college athletes participating in NCAA sports, less than 10 are transgender. For over 100 years, organizations like the International Olympic Committee, the NCAA, and high school leagues have developed frameworks for transgender inclusion in sports. Those same organizations have not asked for the Administration to step in and help in dealing with this issue.

“The Trump Administration has shown they are willing to use the most vulnerable Americans as pawns in a political game.  The lack of clarity in this executive order also further complicates what should be addressed by the sport certification board and associations.

“Rather than addressing the needs of students and families, such as widening achievement gaps, gun violence in schools, or lowering the cost of college, President Trump is choosing to wage a culture war.  This is not about fairness in sports— it’s about creating fear and division.  We should be focused on policies that support all students, not ones that aim to further marginalize an already vulnerable group.”
