Scott Statement on Appointment of Ivory Toldson as Executive Director of the White House Initiative on HBCUs

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after President Barack Obama announced that Dr. Ivory Toldson, an associate professor at Howard University, will be the permanent Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Toldson had been serving as the interim Executive Director since late July, after the death of Dr. George Cooper:

“For the progress of society and our democracy, it is essential that every American has equal access to quality, higher education. Historically Black Colleges and Universities play a crucial role in making the dream of college a reality for millions of hard-working students. For HBCUs to continue their incredible legacy, they need long-lasting stability and support from the White House, Congress, and the nation at-large. It comes as good news that Dr. Ivory Toldson has been appointed the permanent Executive Director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Dr. Toldson is a nationally recognized expert in analyzing success indicators for school-aged black males, and the need for more African Americans to study and pursue careers in STEM fields. I am pleased that he brings this wealth of knowledge and experience to his new position.”
