Scott Statement on April Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement today after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that during the month of April, the economy added 160,000 jobs and the unemployment rate held steady at 5 percent:
“Today’s job report represents the 74th consecutive month of private-sector job growth while the unemployment rate remains steady at 5 percent. This is excellent news and proves that under President Obama and his Administration, we continue to recover from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.
“Recently, the Department of Labor proposed a number of bold initiatives and policies to help protect retirees’ savings, workers on the job, and workers’ right to organize. Unfortunately, the Majority continues to try to block these proposals. These attacks are a waste of the taxpayers’ time and money, and would be harmful to working families if they ever succeeded. We should refocus the Committee’s priorities. Together, we can work on bipartisan solutions to boost wages, help workers balance work and family life, and level for the playing field for American workers. We owe it to working people to build on the economic progress we have seen these past 74 months.”
