Scott Commemorates Olmstead Anniversary, Denounces Impact of Trumpcare on Americans with Disabilities
WASHINGTON – Committee on Education and the Workforce Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement today marking the anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Olmstead v. L.C.which held that people with disabilities have the right to live in their communities under the Americans with Disabilities Act:
“Today we mark the anniversary of the Olmstead decision – a tremendous civil rights victory for Americans with disabilities. In its ruling 18 years ago, the Supreme Court made it unmistakably clear that people with disabilities have the right to live their lives where and how they choose. That is why it is a cruel irony that on this day of celebration, the Senate Republicans unveiled their Trumpcare bill. By gutting Medicaid, which provides the critical supports that people with disabilities need to live in their communities, this bill would have a devastating impact on these Americans and their freedom. Cuts to Medicaid would also severely limit the services schools could provide to students with disabilities. It is unconscionable that Senate Republicans would release legislation that would put the promise of Olmstead at risk on the anniversary of that same decision. Instead of drastically cutting care for our nation’s most vulnerable citizens, the Senate should be advancing proposals that would continue to empower people with disabilities. This starts with legislation that helps Americans with disabilities live independently with access to affordable, quality health care and services. We must protect and defend Medicaid in order to fulfill the promise of Olmstead.”
