Scott, Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls to Address Inequities in School Discipline of Black Girls
WASHINGTON – ON THURSDAY, April 28, 2016, Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) will be joined by Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Robin Kelly (IL-02), and Yvette Clark (NY-09) in hosting “Rethink Discipline: A Conversation on Black Girls in the School-to-Prison Pipeline.” The event will take a closer look at the the biases, policies, and practices that exacerbate the disproportionate discipline black girls face in schools, and how the criminalization of their behavior often fuels the school-to-prison pipeline.
This event will bring together the leading experts in the field who have examined the intersectionality of race and gender in analyzing the criminalization of black girls in the schools, and will also serve as part of the official launch of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls. This conversation will feature Dr. Monique Morris, co-founder of The National Black Women’s Justice Institute and author of Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools, and Professor Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, Columbia and UCLA School of Law, Founder of the African American Policy Forum and co-author of “Black Girls Matter: Pushed Out, Overpoliced and Underprotected.” The conversation will be moderated by EBONY Magazine’s Jamilah Lemieux.
