Rep. Miller: Stripping of Workers’ Rights ‘An Assault on Working People Everywhere’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement today on efforts in Wisconsin and other states to take away public workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain.

“Efforts by Republican governors in Wisconsin and other states to strip the fundamental rights of workers are an assault on working people everywhere. I strongly urge Gov. Scott Walker and his fellow Republican governors to withdraw proposals to wipe out basic rights of public sector employees and concentrate instead on creating good American jobs.

“These anti-labor initiatives are nothing more than a bald-faced political effort to bust the unions of hard-working middle class families. These union members are taxpayers who teach our children, keep our communities safe and provide critical services to residents of their states. Even while the wealthy receive a free pass time and time again, union members have made it clear that they are willing to make additional sacrifices to help reduce the deficit on top of the sacrifices they have already made. Giving up their basic rights, however, is a sacrifice they shouldn’t be forced to make.”
