Rep. Miller Statement on December Jobs Numbers

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, issued the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy created 200,000 new jobs in December and the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent.

“Today's strong jobs numbers are encouraging. Congressional leaders should recognize that now is the time to work together to strengthen the economy further, not undermine growth.  No more threats to raise taxes on the middle class.  No more brinksmanship.  No more trying to run out the clock on critically needed measures for America's middle class.  I am joining other Democratic leaders in calling on the Republican conferees to the payroll tax bill to come back from their vacations right now and work with our conferees to guarantee 160 million Americans that they will get the payroll tax cut for the rest of this year, and to extend unemployment insurance benefits.  The American people expect and need our economic leadership
