Rep. George Miller Statement on the 20th Anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act
WASHINGTON – Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democratic member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement marking the 20th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act.
“Today, we celebrate a monumental anniversary for our nation’s working women and working families. While we celebrate, we also must remember that the Family and Medical Leave Act was only supposed to be a first step: Half of all workers are unable to take job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act and the federal law only guarantees workers unpaid leave.
“That’s why our next task is to deliver the full promise of workplace leave policies that properly value our nation’s families. This means extending FMLA’s benefits to all workers. It also means looking at ways to guarantee workers access to paid FMLA and sick leave. A working woman – or any worker for that matter – shouldn’t have to choose between the family member they love and the paycheck they need.”
