Rep. George Miller Statement on Nomination of Thomas Perez as Secretary of Labor

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democratic member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement today after President Obama nominated Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez to be the next U.S. Secretary of Labor.

“I applaud President Obama’s nomination of Tom Perez to be the next Secretary of Labor. Mr. Perez has had an accomplished career fighting for the fundamental rights of all Americans. As we work to build a fair and sustainable economic recovery that grows the middle class, the skills that Mr. Perez brings to this job will be invaluable.

“This is an important cabinet post for the nation’s workers, retirees, and employers. Our country needs a strong Department of Labor to ensure that Americans can obtain meaningful employment, fair pay, a safe workplace and a dignified retirement. When we reward hard work, we create more business opportunities and more jobs. I look forward to working with Mr. Perez as he carries out this critical mission, building on the progress made by former Secretary Solis. The Senate should move without delay or partisan obstruction and approve this nomination.”
