Ranking Member Scott Statement on May Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 272,000 jobs in May, and the unemployment rate ticked up from 3.9 to 4.0 percent.

"Four years ago, the world faced an unprecedented global pandemic, which caused the U.S. economy to lose nearly 22 million jobs within just two months. Millions of Americans were struggling to find work, businesses were closing, all of which disproportionately impacted low-wage workers, women, and workers of color. Today, thanks to the steadfast investments of Congressional Democrats and the Biden-Harris Administration our economy has not only returned to pre-pandemic unemployment levels, but we have recovered stronger and faster than any other industrialized nation.

"Since President Biden took office, 15.6 million jobs have been added to the U.S. economy, surpassing any previous four-year presidential term. In comparison, the previous Administration reported the most job loss under any single President. This a testament to our unwavering dedication to prioritize workers and grow the economy from the bottom up and the middle out. Despite inheriting an economy in disarray, President Biden swiftly initiated measures to jumpstart job creation, turning the tide on the historic job losses.

"As we reflect on our progress, we must remain vigilant in protecting the rights and well-being of workers. America's prosperity hinges on the strength of its workforce, and continuing to champion policies that uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of every worker. I have long advocated for my critical legislation, the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, which would protect workers right to organize for better benefits, higher pay, and safer workplaces.  Congress should use this moment to reaffirm our commitment to the principles of fairness and accountability, and to the belief that America's greatest strength lies in the resilience and ingenuity of its workers. Together, we will continue to shape a future where every American has the opportunity to thrive."
