Ranking Member Scott Statement on May Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 339,000 jobs in May, as the unemployment rate ticked up slightly from 3.4 percent to 3.7 percent. Since taking office, President Biden has created 13.1 million jobs, which is more jobs created in 28 months than any previous President has created in a single term.
“Under President Biden our economy continues to thrive, despite Congressional Republicans’ irresponsible political games. The unemployment rate is still near record low levels, our job market is continuing to grow, and workers are seeing higher wages. This a direct result of the work of the Biden-Harris Administration and Congressional Democrats to create high-paying, quality jobs.
“By contrast, House Republicans’ biggest accomplishment during their time in the majority has been holding the world economy hostage in order to force through a handful of unpopular, conservative policies.
“Debt ceiling brinkmanship was a false choice from the start. And it was extremely irresponsible of my colleagues to so cavalierly play politics with the world economy. People’s jobs, retirement savings, and livelihoods are on the line.
“I am opposed to any effort to gamble with our nation’s full faith and credit. Rather, I am focused on working with my colleagues to produce a responsible budget and secure a brighter future for working families.”
