Ranking Member Scott Statement on Mahmoud v. Taylor Decision

WASHINGTONRanking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Supreme Court’s ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor, in which the Court ruled in favor of parents desiring to withdraw their children from public school lessons involving children’s books featuring LGBTQIA+ themes.

“One of the many benefits of education is the exposure to new ideas and information that expands students’ worldview and encourages them to learn.  Today’s Supreme Court decision sets a dangerous precedent for the integrity of public education by opening the door to religious viewpoints being used to dictate individualized classroom curriculum.

“This ruling will impact students’ abilities to develop knowledge, understanding, and even empathy, for the very diverse communities of this nation.  Moreover, this decision could allow parents to wield their religious objections to opt students out of learning and require endless combinations of lessons within the same science classroom involving subjects such as evolution, climate change, and sex education.

“Despite today’s ruling, we must continue to fight for progress and to provide all students with a high-quality, public education.”
