Ranking Member Scott Statement on Legislation to Address Opioid Epidemic
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the House passed the Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities Act (SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act).
“The opioid epidemic has claimed the lives of family members, friends, coworkers, and neighbors in communities across this country. This bill will help bring an end to these tragedies by improving access to evidence-based substance use disorder prevention and treatment programs. It expands Medicare coverage of opioid treatment programs, expands Medicaid coverage for at-risk youth, and creates new opportunities to support workers affected by this epidemic.
“The impact of substance use disorder reaches far beyond one individual. It affects entire families, particularly the children of parents who are victims of this epidemic. I am particularly proud of the new initiatives in this bill that will help support children affected by trauma. In addition, for the first time in federal law, the bill recognizes the importance of social and emotional learning.
“While this bill is a positive step forward, we can and must do more to help our communities address the opioid epidemic. I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure that all Americans have access to the services and support they need to lead healthy, fulfilling, and productive lives.”
