Ranking Member Scott Statement on June Jobs Report

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 209,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate ticked down from 3.7 percent to 3.6 percent. This is significantly higher than the Trump administration's pre-pandemic average of 182,000 jobs created each month. Since taking office, President Biden has created just over 13.2 million jobs, which is more jobs created in 29 months than any previous President has created in a single, 48-month term.

“Our economy continues to see historic growth thanks to the strong leadership of the Biden-Harris administration and Congressional Democrats.  We have created a record number of high-quality jobs and made notable strides to ensure that diverse workers from across the country can reap the benefits.

“Regrettably, Congressional Republicans insist on wasting time pushing divisive policies that restrict opportunities for our constituents to succeed. So far this Congress, my Republican colleagues have demonstrated that they would rather hold our economy hostage and undermine vulnerable Americans than actively work to improve the lives of millions of Americans. Now, extreme House Republicans are even threatening to trigger a government shutdown in October.

“The American people deserve a government that puts them first—not politicians obsessed with bathrooms, book bans, and other culture war issues. I remain committed to working with my colleagues to advance meaningful proposals that focus on the real and immediate challenges facing working families.”
