Ranking Member Scott: “Politics Should Never Prevent a Student from Receiving a High-Quality Education”

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement in response to recent House Republican proposal to undermine public K-12 schools under the guise of parents’ rights.

“Politics should never prevent a student from receiving a high-quality education. Regrettably, Republican politicians want to turn classrooms into the epicenter of an extreme culture war while doing nothing to meaningfully help students get back on track. In fact, every Congressional Republican voted against the American Rescue Plan, which provided historic funding to make it actually possible to open schools safely, keep them open safely, and make up for lost learning.

“Now, instead of working with Democrats to address the real issues in schools, Republican lawmakers are proposing legislation that would further politicize our children’s education. We have seen policies to pull funding from schools that do not agree to ban books, censor curriculum and textbooks, and give a vocal minority of parents the power to impose their personal beliefs on all parents. What’s worse, the victims of this extreme agenda are students.

“In the face of this extreme agenda, we should be fighting for evidence-based legislation that positively impacts students’ lives and fosters a safe, healthy learning environment for all students. We must put people over politics and ensure that all students can access an education that allows them to reach their full potential.”
