Ranking Member Scott Issues Statement on Long-Delayed Jobs Report
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added only 64,000 jobs in November after losing 105,000 jobs in October, and the unemployment rate increased from 4.4 percent in September to 4.6 percent in November.
“During former President Biden’s first ten months in office, the economy created 6.3 million jobs. In President Trump’s first ten months in office during his second term, the economy has gained only 499,000 jobs. Under former President Biden, the economy added 16.1 million jobs in total and did not have a single month of seasonally adjusted job loss during his entire term. President Trump returned to office ten months ago, and under his leadership, October is the third month that the economy has lost jobs.
“Moreover, former President Biden created more jobs during his tenure than any Republican president, whether they served four or eight years. Former President Reagan created the most jobs of any Republican President on record—16,128,000 in eight years—which is still less than the 16,140,000 jobs created during former President Biden’s four years.
“After weeks without official jobs numbers, these new reports confirm what millions of Americans have been feeling every day: President Trump is steering the economy in the wrong direction with little regard for the financial strain facing everyday Americans. From rising costs to a worsening healthcare crisis, this Administration continues to show how deeply out of touch it is with the challenges confronting the public.
“Despite this Administration’s rhetoric, Americans are working harder than ever just to keep up, yet the President continues to make reckless policy decisions.
“On top of that, Congressional Republicans are on the verge of letting the Affordable Care Act enhanced premium tax credits lapse with no plan to protect the millions who rely on them. Letting these credits run out in the middle of a nationwide affordability crisis is not just irresponsible—it’s dangerous. Families need certainty when it comes to their health care, not chaos and political gamesmanship.
“Democrats remain committed to fighting for policies that put working people first: accessible, affordable healthcare; an economy that grows from the bottom up and the middle out; and a government free of chaos and corruption that provides clear, reliable information instead of obscuring the truth. We will continue pushing for a strong labor market, lower costs, and a healthcare system that works for every American—not just the well-connected and the wealthy.”
