Ranking Member Scott: Draft DeVos Proposal on Sexual Misconduct is a Major Step Backwards
WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) released the following statement in response to a report from the New York Times that revealed Secretary DeVos’s draft proposal to rewrite policies for addressing sexual misconduct on campus.
“The draft regulation regarding sexual harassment and misconduct that is reportedly under consideration by Secretary DeVos would be a major step backward in our collective effort to provide a safe learning environment for all students. The proposed rule creates a new process and evidentiary standard that makes it harder for survivors of harassment, abuse, and assault to achieve the justice they deserve.
“Campus sexual misconduct is already underreported and those who do come forward are too often denied respect, compassion, and a fair investigation of their claim. The recent scandals at Ohio State University, the University of Southern California, and Michigan State University demonstrate the need to strengthen protections for survivors. If submitted without significant revision, the Secretary’s draft rule would be a radical shift in the opposite direction.
“Secretary DeVos should scrap this proposal and refocus the Department’s efforts toward making colleges campuses and school classrooms safer and more welcoming for all students.”
