Ranking Member Scott Calls on Government Watchdog to Assess DOGE Access to Americans’ Private Information at ED, DOL & HHS

WASHINGTON – House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) requested the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to immediately assess the security of information technology (IT) systems at the Department of Education (ED), the Department of Labor (DOL), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) following reports of President Trump and Elon Musk’s unsanctioned Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) illegally accessing data from various government agencies.
In the letter, Ranking Member Scott notes that DOGE has already gained access to the IT system controlling all U.S. government payments and internal systems of the Department of Educationincluding the private information of federal student aid recipients. As of this week, DOGE has infiltrated HHS, gaining access millions of seniors and other individuals sensitive health and financial information.
“This is a constitutional emergency, Insofar as the Inspectors General of both the Departments of Education and Labor have been fired by President Trump, there is now a void of oversight for a very young and inexperienced team and their leader, the world’s richest man who operates with ‘autonomy almost no one can control,’ as they gain dangerously broad powers,” wrote Ranking Member Scott.
DOGE has also demanded access to all IT systems at the Department of Labor (DOL), which contain private information concerning workplace health, mine safety, and child labor violation investigations, the identities of witnesses who file complaints against their employers, and confidential information that could upend the nation’s economy.
Ranking Member Scott concluded: “The nation needs answers immediately about the scope of those powers, any laws, regulations or other policies regarding access to these data and systems which may be implicated by DOGE’s infiltration and the integrity of government programs on which schoolchildren and working families depend for their lives and livelihoods.”
