Ranking Member Scott Applauds HHS Action to Ensure Robust Protections for People with Disabilities

WASHINGTON – Today, Ranking Member Scott applauded the Biden-Harris administration after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a proposed rule to update regulations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that ensure access to health and human services programs.

“We have come a long way toward ending discrimination against people with disabilities in America since pioneering advocates—like the late Judy Heumann—fought to secure some of the first federal antidiscrimination protections in our history.  Regrettably, the reality is that far too many people with disabilities still face barriers to accessing the health care and social services they need.  That is why, just last year, I called on HHS to take long-awaited action to implement recommendations of the U.S. Access Board to ensure medical examination equipment is accessible to individuals with disabilities.

“By updating and modernizing the rules that prevent discrimination on the basis of a disability in any programs that receive funding from HHS, the Biden-Harris administration is taking a step to further realize equality and justice for every American.”
