Pell Grant Scholarship Remains at Highest Levels in History

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With millions of students relying on federal student aid and scholarships to make the dream of a college degree a reality, today U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Education announced the Pell Grant scholarship award for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year. The maximum award, $5,550, reflects historic investments made by Democrats in the most recent Congresses to significantly increase the Pell Grant scholarship and lower interest rates on need based student loans. On July 1st 2011, the interest rate for need based student loans will go down to 3.4 percent, fulfilling the Democrats’ 2006 promise to cut interest rates on need based student loans in half.

“The Pell Grant is the great equalizer for millions of college students. In this economy, federal aid is a critical resource for students and families. Today’s announcement allows families to plan for how they will pay for next year’s college tuition and fees.

“Investing in college students is a win for our economy and for our global competitiveness. A more talented, qualified workforce will help get our country back on track. The Democratic Congress made Pell a top priority and we won’t stray from that commitment. With the maximum Pell Grant at a continued all-time high, we must continue our effort to make college affordable, to invest in students and keep college costs transparent.”
