Miller Statement on Supreme Court Decision in Affirmative Action Case
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, today released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court delivered the decision in Fisher v. University of Texas-Austin, a case challenging the use of race as one factor in admissions policies in higher education. The Court preserved the principle that universities may consider racial and ethnic diversity as one factor among many in a carefully crafted admissions policy. The decision was 7-to-1.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision in Fisher is a victory for equal opportunity in higher education,” said Rep. Miller. “Removing racial disparities in education continues to be a matter of unfinished business for our country. The Fisher ruling rightly preserved past holdings of the court acknowledging that a diverse learning environment benefits students, our workforce, and our economy. In the coming months, all eyes will be on the lower court to make sure that all students have the opportunity to attend colleges and universities with a broad and diverse student body.”
