Miller Statement on Republican Efforts to Block Democratic Student Loan Bills

Washington, D.C. – Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement today after House and Senate Republicans voted to block Democratic efforts to prevent student loan rates from doubling on July 1.

“Today, Senate Republicans blocked debate on a Democratic student loan bill.  An hour later, House Republicans yet again rejected efforts to allow a vote on a Democratic student loan bill in the House.  Our young people and their families deserve better than this. They deserve serious and full consideration of fair and popular legislation that puts a college education within reach for more than 7 million students and families.  We cannot allow interest rates to double on low-income and middle-income families who have already sacrificed a great deal in these tough economic times. I urge my Republican colleagues to work with Democrats to find a fair solution that does not harm students and families and keeps interest rates low before July 1.”
