Miller Statement on President Obama’s ConnectED Initiative
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement today after President Obama unveiled a new initiative called ConnectED to connect 99 percent of America’s students to the internet through high-speed broadband and high-speed wireless within five years and to improve the skills of educators to use technology to improve learning.
“I applaud President Obama for taking this important step to help bring our schools into the 21st century. The ConnectED initiative will help bridge the digital divide that still exists for too many schools and students. President Obama understands that technology can be a valuable tool to prepare students for high-growth, high-demand jobs in the global economy and to upgrade the skills of our nation’s teachers.”
“That’s why earlier this year, I introduced the Transforming Education through Technology Act. This effort, similar to President Obama’s, will help speed the adoption of innovative digital tools to improve student outcomes, close achievement gaps, boost educator skills and improve efficiency and productivity.”
The Transforming Education through Technology Act would provide resources to help states and school districts put the best technology in the hands of students and teachers to improve achievement for all students. The bill would support technologies that would, among other things, allow students and teachers to receive real-time feedback, exchange information, and connect instantly with peers beyond school walls.
