Miller Statement on President Obama’s Action to End Deceptive Recruiting of Veterans by Schools
WASHINGTON – Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement on President Obama’s executive order aimed at stopping deceptive recruiting practices of schools that target members of the military, veterans and their families. The executive order is intended to crack down on misleading online recruitment from colleges and require schools to provide information about dropout rates and financial aid possibilities.
“I applaud President Obama for taking steps to ensure that our veterans, military members and their families have an opportunity to attend college without accumulating significant, unnecessary debt because of deceptive recruiting practices by certain colleges and universities.
“As we honor and protect our service members for their sacrifice to our country, we must also protect them from the predatory practices of certain postsecondary programs. We must ensure that our veterans have the tools they need to make informed decisions when choosing programs and that the courses available to our veterans prepare them for the civilian workforce.
“Veterans have provided an invaluable service to our country and in recognizing the importance of that service we owe it to them to make sure that the education they receive is of the highest quality and that they are able to have fulfilling careers.”
President Obama’s executive order comes as April is the Month of Military Children. Established by Caspar Weinberger, Secretary of Defense during the Reagan administration, the Month of the Military Child is observed to let the country’s military children know their sacrifices are appreciated.
