Miller Statement on Newest NAEP Results

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the Education and the Workforce Committee, today issued the following statement on the most recent results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as the Nation’s Report Card.

“We need all students to progress, to grow and to thrive in school. On one hand, in math, it is clear that what we’re doing is working. In reading, a critical component of learning, student achievement remains flat. And in both subjects, achievement gaps remain and are cause for real concern. Success in school shouldn’t be for some students, in some subject areas.

“We are in one of the most dynamic education reform moments in our nation’s history. The reforms happening around the country should be seen as an opportunity for all schools. This report is a wakeup call to states who have yet to apply for President Obama’s waivers to No Child Left Behind, and a wake up to Congress that we need comprehensive, smart policy that supports all our schools, students and teachers.”
