Miller Statement on New Job Training Grants Issued as Part of Miller's Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA)
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), senior Democrat on the Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement after the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor awarded nearly $500 million to community colleges across the country. These grants will support job training and workforce development opportunities and were funded through the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act at no new cost to taxpayers.
This is the first installment of the $2 billion, four-year investment to increase opportunities for the unemployed. The next award of competitive grants is expected in 2012.
"In this economy, community colleges are playing an increasingly important role for the millions of Americans who are trying to better prepare themselves for success on the job. President Obama, Secretary Duncan and Secretary Solis are all committed to helping Americans get back to work and providing our workforce with the knowledge and skills the global economy demands. This funding comes at no new cost to the taxpayer. The Democratic Congress made it a priority to save billions of dollars in higher education and invest that money back into the students, workers and families who deserve it. Smart and strategic investments like these in education, in community colleges and in public-private partnerships will help support job growth and strengthen our economy.”
