Miller Statement on Department of Education’s New Teacher Equity Initiative
WASHINGTON—Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement today in response to the Department of Education’s “Excellent Educators for All Initiative,” which aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their background or zip code, have access to effective teachers. The Department developed this plan with extensive input from the country’s Chief State School Officers, school districts, civil rights groups, teachers, principals and other stakeholders.
“Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today affirmed the right of all children, regardless of where they live, their race or national origin, or how much money their parents make, to a world-class education. A high-quality education begins with a high-quality teacher. But too often, our nation’s low-income students and students of color are denied access to the strongest educators. Unequal access to effective teachers is a civil rights problem, and fixing that problem must be among our nation’s top educational priorities. Anything less would mean faltering on the fundamental American values of equality and opportunity for all. I applaud the department’s new plan and their leadership in advancing greater educational equity.
