Miller: Obama’s community college proposal will ensure American workers remain globally competitive
WASHINGTON – Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement today after President Obama presented his fiscal year 2013 budget to Congress and proposed a new partnership between community colleges and local businesses to help connect workers with jobs in demand.
“President Obama’s budget proposal released today addresses the real challenges facing our nation. By making smart investments today, we can continue to move our economic recovery forward and create an economy that is built to last for all Americans.
“One challenge is to ensure that our nation’s workers remain competitive in a global economy. President Obama’s call today to invest in our nation’s community colleges, and increase local partnerships between colleges and high-demand industries, will ensure that the world’s most productive workers can remain at the top. The proposal does this by building on targeted training and workforce development best practices that are already happening at many community colleges today.
“We have seen how effective partnerships across the country help to link a ready workforce with industries ready to hire and grow. By building on these innovative programs, we can increase access to job training partnerships that connect 2 million Americans with careers in demand today. And having access to skilled, qualified workers can make the difference on where a business locates, saving and creating more jobs for the American people.
“Democrats stand ready to support this and other proposals to modernize and increase the effectiveness of our nation’s workforce development programs.”
