Miller: Gainful Employment Rule Raises Expectations for Career Colleges
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Education today announced final rules to help ensure that career colleges accepting federal funds improve outcomes for students and protect consumers from waste, fraud and abuse. Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, released the following statement in response to the regulations:
“I commend the Department of Education for moving forward with a rule that raises expectations for career programs that too often overcharge and underprepare their graduates. While the new rule does not solve all the problems documented by numerous federal agencies, investigators, state attorneys general, and the media, this rule begins to put bad career programs on the hook for saddling graduates with excessively high debt. Additionally, new disclosure requirements will expose the worst programs, which will give potential students the opportunity to think twice before enrolling.
“Moving forward, I hope to see the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act include further efforts to curb predatory recruitment, abusive practices, and the gaming of current federal requirements both at career programs and all institutions.”
