Miller Announces Changes to Education and the Workforce Committee Democratic Staff
WASHINGTON—Rep. George Miller, senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, today announced changes to the committee’s Democratic staff.
Megan O’Reilly has been promoted to staff director for the Committee Democrats. She is replacing Jody Calemine, who is leaving the committee after more than a decade of service to take a position with the Communications Workers of America. Brian Kennedy will assume Megan’s former role as general counsel.
Miller lauded Calemine upon his departure:
“I am grateful for Jody’s many years of service to me and the committee, and for his invaluable work on some of the most significant legislative fights of our era, particularly on matters concerning workers’ rights, wages, and fair treatment on the job.”
Miller also praised the committee’s senior Democratic staff as they assume their new roles:
“I am very excited to continue to have such talented, experienced people leading the committee’s Democratic staff. The energy and commitment Megan and Brian bring to their new roles will be crucial in our ongoing work to grow and strengthen the middle class. Megan has proven to be a thoughtful, insightful leader, with a particularly valuable expertise in health care policy, and I am confident that my committee staff are in good hands with her at the helm. I am also grateful to have Brian return to his role as general counsel, where I know he will continue to provide valuable legal guidance on all matters before the committee.”
STAFF DIRECTOR: Megan O’Reilly joined the committee in January 2007 as a labor policy advisor, focusing on health care and civil rights. She has a BA from American University and received her law degree from the DePaul University College of Law. Megan was a lead for the committee in drafting and passing the landmark health reform law, the Affordable Care Act. Prior to joining the committee, Megan worked for Congresswoman Anna Eshoo. She also served as a law clerk at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, as well as the law firms of McCarthy Duffy and Baker and McKenzie. Megan most recently held the title of General Counsel for the committee.
GENERAL COUNSEL: Brian Kennedy recently returned to the committee from the Department of Labor, where he served as Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs for the first five years of the Obama administration. Brian previously served as General Counsel on the committee, and has worked in the Senate for both Senators Harry Reid and Paul Simon. During the Clinton administration, Brian worked at the White House as a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Affairs. Brian also served as Deputy Director of the Job Corps program. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University in 1982, where he graduated with honors, and his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985.
