Democrats Respond to DOL Extending Tip Regulations Comment Period

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), ranking member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, Congressman Keith Ellison (MN-05), vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congressman Mark Takano (CA-41), ranking member of the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), vice ranking member of the Education and the Workforce Committee issued the following joint statement in response to the Department of Labor’s decision to grant their request for a 30-day extension to the  public comment period on a proposed rule that would let employers pocket or redistribute the tips of workers who are paid the federal minimum wage.

“We are pleased that the Department of Labor has agreed to the request from 46 House members for a 30-day extension to the comment period for its proposed rule. According to the Department, this proposed rule will impact an estimated 1.3 million tipped workers. This extension will provide these workers with an extra 30 days to share with the Department how the proposal will impact them. Most tipped workers need every penny they earn and their voices need to be considered as part of a change to rules that could take hard-earned money out of their pockets.”
