Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Denounces Betsy DeVos’ Decision to Block Protections For Americans With Student Loans
SCHAUMBURG, IL - Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the Committee on Education and the Workforce issued the following statement in response to the Department of Education’s decision to block states from enforcing consumer protections against student loan collection companies:
“Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ decision to strip states of their ability to protect Americans from fraud and abuse in student loans is unprecedented and poses serious challenges for working and middle-class families across the country and here in Illinois. States have the right to enact and enforce consumer protections to prevent people with student debt from predatory lenders. Both Republicans and Democrats have supported common-sense protections for borrowers in their states and this decision is a potentially disastrous change. I strongly urge Secretary DeVos to reverse this decision and will continue to advocate in Congress to ensure students have access to a quality, affordable education.”
