Committee Dems Announce New Labor Policy Director
WASHINGTON – Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democrat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, today announced that Leticia Mederos has been promoted to serve as the committee Democratic staff’s new labor policy director.
“Letty brings passion, strategic thinking, and a wealth of policy and political experience to this role,” says Rep. Miller. “Her dedication and hard work will help our committee advance policies that support working families and protect their rights. Her vast experience has already proven invaluable to the committee, and we are lucky to have her as we continue the fight to strengthen the middle class.”
Previously, Mederos served as a senior policy advisor for the committee, focusing on labor and women’s issues. She has also held numerous other roles on Capitol Hill, including serving as chief of staff for Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM). Mederos has dedicated her career to advancing legislation that improves women’s economic security and the well-being of working families, such as the Paycheck Fairness Act, the Healthy Families Act, and the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was the first major piece of legislation that President Obama signed into law. She also brings to the committee extensive expertise navigating the appropriations process, thanks to her work on the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies bill.
Previously, Mederos worked at the National Partnership for Women & Families as vice president for work and family programs, among other roles.
Mederos was born in Havana, Cuba, and lived in Miami until 1995. She has a master’s degree in American history from Rutgers University and a bachelor of arts in history/social work from Florida International University.
Mederos will be filling a role recently vacated by Michele Varnhagen, who is now with AARP.
